The Musician in Society highlights social roles in music making

The Musician in Society is a new college textbook written by Brett Boutwell and Blake Howe and published by W. W. Norton. Instead of focusing primarily on composers and works, The Musician in Society highlights the many social roles involved in music making. Each chapter explores a different role in musical culture, from listener to patron to conservator and includes profiles of contemporary professionals, helping students see how these roles function in today’s musical world. SoS’s Danita Ng-Poss is profiled as one of these professionals.

To announce the launch of the book, Norton Music is hosting an online workshop with the authors Thursday, October 29 at 12 pm Eastern (USA) / 9 am Pacific (USA) / 16:00 UTC. At this event, Brett and Blake will talk about why they wrote this book, and how it is different from what’s already out there. There will also be a Q&A at the end of the session.
