Agatha All Along

SoS goes down, down, down, The Witches' Road

“Agatha All Along” is the latest Disney/Marvel Television live action series for which Symbols of Sound provided vocal music transcription for localization.

Sometimes transcribing can feel like many miles of tricks and trials, but this time the Witches’ Road was straight and clear. That’s good news to Marvel fans around the world who know the importance of the ballad in Agatha’s story.

Fans will hear “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road” in their local language when it arrives on Disney+ September 18, 2024.

A Marvel-ous Autumn

As summer wound down, work picked up at Symbols of Sound. The autumn months at SoS have had a breathtaking amount of activity including…

  • music preparation for a orchestral studio recording of a stage musical
  • music preparation for 4 big band charts from hand-written scores
  • vocal transcription for over 100 episodes of television
  • vocal transcription for 3 feature films, 2 of which were musicals.

The first of the feature films, The Marvels, was not a musical; however it had a surprising number of vocals that were an important part of the story. Disney needed to ensure the vocals were transcribed properly for foreign dubbing, and turned to SoS once again.

The Marvels releases in theaters on Friday, November 10, 2023.

2022 Highlights

In spite of the continuing COVID pandemic, 2022 had a number of highlights for Symbols of Sound. It was a busy year for our work with Disney, beginning with an Oscar for 2021’s Encanto. The year also saw work on a number of features including Turning Red, Disenchanted, Strange World, Pinocchio, Hocus Pocus 2, Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers, Fire Island, Amsterdam, and Zombies 3; as well as several TV and streaming specials such as The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Mickey Saves Christmas, and Lego Star Wars Summer Vacation; along with the usual run of regular TV and streaming series episodes.

Aside from Disney, SoS provided music preparation for the Oscar-nominated film Women Talking, and printing sheet music to be used in scenes for the Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

In the live performance realm, SoS once again provided music contracting and music preparation for the annual SCL Awards, a show which becomes a larger part of the Hollywood awards season every year.

One surprise highlight of 2022 was a wonderful orchestral demo recording for “The Little Women Musical” composed by Dan Redfeld with lyrics by Christina Harding and John Koladziej. Aside from music preparation, SoS’s Jason Poss also provided score reading and “golden ears” in the booth for multiple days of orchestra and vocal recordings.

Hawkeye releases today

...with Avengers on Broadway?

Hawkeye releases today on Disney+. Surprisingly, there was vocal music in the series that needed transcription and dubbing. Broadway and film music legend Marc Shaiman composed a musical number for “Rogers: The Musical” that is featured in the show. Who better to parody Broadway and the Avengers than Shaiman? Jason Poss admits to laughing out loud while working on this satirical show tune.
